Sustainability Tips: Hygiene & Bathroom Products

Due to recent events regarding global warming, various budding environmental movements as well as the looming presence that is the climate crisis, it is more important than ever to start implementing environmentally-conscious habits into your everyday life. I have compiled a list of tips (and tricks!) to help you go green by changing small things in your day-to-day life.

#1: Swap out a plastic toothbrush for a bamboo alternative! Yes, bamboo toothbrushes are a thing and they are becoming even easier and cheaper to purchase now that the climate crisis is finally hitting the mainstream! Pictured to the right is a bamboo toothbrush that I recently purchased and I can attest that it does the job of a regular, ‘ol plastic toothbrush while cutting down on single-use plastic and looking much more aesthetically-pleasing in the process!

#2: Make some of your own hygienic products such as hand-soap or toothpaste to cut down on plastic! This may seem a bit out-there but making your own toothpaste is actually really simple and a quick Google search (or Ecosia search if you’re interested in planting trees through your daily internet searches for free!) can confirm that there are dozens of recipes out there! Do your research and you may just find an easy recipe that you and your family can enjoy without the wasteful plastic packaging of regular, store-bought toiletries!

#3: Look out for products with harmful chemicals! You’d be surprised by the amount of harmful chemicals that could be in the face washes, shampoos, conditioners, toothpastes and makeup that you use every single day. Some harmful chemicals that may be incorporated into your own morning routine include parabens in shampoos and conditioners, artificial fragrances in perfumes and colognes, heavy metals or lead in foundations and lipstick as well as even tiny plastic microbeads (again with the plastic!) in body and face washes! Do your research and look at the backs of the products that you buy before buying them!
